CLP Program of New Castle Presbytery

Syllabus for the course, “Introduction to Preaching”

The objective of this course stems from Great Commission of Jesus reported in Matthew 28: "go...and make disciples of all peoples. . .teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you." The objective of this course will therefore be to train candidates for Commissioned Lay ministry to preach the good news about Jesus in a winsome way, motivating those who listen to become his disciples.

Pedagogy of the course: There are assigned readings for this course, and there will be class discussion about the art of preaching. However, the pedagogy will be more practical than theoretical. Students will perfect their preaching mostly through practice. Each student will be assigned to a preaching pastor-mentor, who will arrange to have the student preach at least two sermons to his/her congregation. The pastor-mentor and listening congregation will give constructive feedback so that the student will become aware of his/her preaching strengths, and areas that need more attention. Students will learn also by listening to good preaching. They will make two critical reports to their fellow students on preaching they have heard: one based upon their reading of a renowned historic preacher (of their own choosing, and approved by the instructor); and the other based upon their their listening to the sermon of a local preacher (of their own choosing and approved by the instructor). The local pastor on whose sermon they report shall be a different person than the pastor-mentor.
